Izmit Bay Crossing Project, Turkey

This project, ( for which a consortium so called AJTC formed by Turkish, Japanese and British firms is about to be awarded the Contract for its construction by the General Directorate of Highways as the result of tender which was based on BOT model of financing) consists of 44 Km. long 2x3 lanes motorway section and a steel suspension bridge together with steel and reinforced concrete viaducts providing an access to the suspension bridge to cross the Izmit Bay extending within this motorway section. With this project which starts from an interchange that shall be built on the Anatolian Motorway, the Izmit Bay is crossed via the suspension bridge between Kababurun and Dilburnu locations. After passing through the bridge, the motorway crosses an existing state highway by means of an interchange and then it extends to join into the Bursa-Orhangazi Motorway section in the vicinity of Orhangazi town

The most important structure of the project, the steel suspension bridge with its 1688 m. long main span together with its total length of 2808 m. shall be the one having second longest span width in the world. On the other hand, the other important structure of this project, the steel viaduct structure which provides an approach to the suspension bridge is composed of 11 spans each having a length of 100 m.

The tender proposal designs for the steel suspension bridge and for the approach viaducts of this project had been made by TEK-YEN on behalf of AJTC who had participated to the construction tender.
