Technical Inspections of 54 Bridges and 5 Viaducts on 1st Peripheral Highway of Istanbul

With this work which was performed in 1992, through a tender awarded by 17th Division of General Directorate of Highways, the technical inspections for 54 various sized large structures (underpass / overpass bridges) and 5 viaducts existing on the 1st peripheral Highway of Istanbul and on the other roads connecting to this one had been done.

Non-destructive testing methods such as Schmith hammer and ultrasonic impact test had been used for determination of concrete compressive strength when these works were performed. Beside of these, the probable concrete compressive strength values had been determined by performing laboratory tests on core samples taken from the structures, and also by making correlations according to BS 1881 standard between compressive strength values found from core samples and the results obtained from the non-destructive tests. Moreover, chlorine checks and impermeability tests were made on the concrete core samples in laboratories.

As the results of observations and measurements made at sites of structures handled, undesired physical conditions of all structural components (decks, piers, footings, expansion joints, handrails etc.) were determined.
Inspection reports prepared for each structure, included information on inspection works and related findings, and recommendations for repair / renovation purposes.

Moreover a manual named "How to make Technical Inspections on Bridges" for utilisation all over Turkey for similar future works was prepared.
